Everyone Deserves to Be Remembered During the Holidays

Community News  Fundraising
How are you spreading compassion this Holiday season? A shoebox gift from you to our community is a wonderful way to start.

The Holidays are quickly approaching, and Squamish Helping Hands is seeking Shoebox Gift donations for our residents and local participants. For many years, our community has generously come together to assemble thoughtful, personalized shoebox gifts, ensuring everyone has something special to unwrap during the holiday season. This tradition has brought countless smiles, moments of joy, and a shared sense of gratitude to Under One Roof.

We often associate the holidays with warmth, belonging, family, stability, and having a safe place to call home. However, these experiences are not a reality for everyone. For people experiencing homelessness, this time of year can also bring feelings of isolation, uncertainty, and grief.

You might wonder how a small gift can make a meaningful difference. While it may not change someone’s circumstances, it can offer something equally important: a reminder that they are seen, valued, and part of a community that cares.

We encourage donations to be thoughtful and personal. Have fun, get creative, and keep the needs of our community in mind! If you are wondering what items to include in your Shoebox Gift, here are a few meaningful ideas:

  • Non-perishable treats – chocolate, candy, tea, any individually packaged snacks
  • Gift cards – small denominations for local coffee and food shops
  • Personal hygiene products – toothbrushes, deodorant, lip balm, and travel-sized toiletries.
  • Warm accessories – socks, gloves, hats, mittens and more
  • Small comfort items – journals, pens, puzzle books, or playing cards
  • Handmade art – a thoughtful card with a handwritten message spreading kindness and connection or a personalized art piece
The 2025 Homelessness count showed us that 73% of respondents experiencing homelessness had been living in Squamish for at least one year. It is important for us to understand that these people are our neighbours, our friends, someone's family member, and most certainly, but not least, a member of this community. During a season centered around connection and togetherness, it is important that we extend the same sense of purpose and belonging to everyone. A small donation of a Shoebox Gift is one way we can do just that
- Dyan dos Santos, Assistant Housing Manager

Last year, we received over 100 Shoebox Gift donations, with many residents and participants opening personalized gifts from the generous people of Squamish on Christmas morning. Each gift offered more than just something to unwrap. They created moments of joy, comfort, and connection, reminding those we support that their community is thinking of them.

We are incredibly grateful for every contribution, especially during a season that can be busy and demanding. We recognize that everyone’s capacity to give looks different, and no gesture of kindness is too small. When we give with compassion, we help create a community where care and generosity extend beyond the holiday season.

On Christmas day, all donated Shoebox Gifts will be distributed to someone experiencing homelessness and poverty who access services at Under One Roof.

Wrapped shoebox gifts can be delivered to Under One Roof at 37871 Third Ave, Squamish BC. Donations will be accepted by December 24th.  For more ways to give, visit squamishhelpinghands.ca/ways-to-give.
